Written by Ben Clay
Friday, 26 September 2008

A group from the Village Singers were treated to a tour of the upper levels of Wells cathedral organised by Malcolm Mogford. Weak hearts and nerves were overcome and the fascinating tour culminated in beautiful views from the top of the main tower.

Hiding selected content
Written by Administrator
Saturday, 13 September 2008

It is possible to hide parts of an article by using a conditional directive. Consider the following

Hello [mosif user=admin]administrator[else]everbody[endif]

If you create an article containing the above, only the administrator will see "Hello administrator", everybody else will see "Hello everybody".

  • The above is deliberately wrong to allow you to see the construction. You need to replace the square brackets [] with braces {}

This just in from Bob Walden...

My wife, Jean and I, along with Rocky and Vickie Parsons of Springfield, Missouri, USA, visited Vickie's uncle, Bill Tyley in the summer of 2006.  We met many special people there and loved Westbury.  Bill's hospitality and the townspeople's friendliness made it our best vacation, ever.  Our love to Bill and friendship to everybody we met

Bob sent some photographs which are are in the gallery.

The Friends of Westbury Church Strawberry Tea - £320 Raised
Written by Janet Fisher
Thursday, 12 June 2008

June 7th was a lovely summer afternoon and 79 Friends and visitors came to the Strawberry Tea in the village hall. Seeing the sign outside the hall inviting passers by to join us all, 8 holiday makers did just that and came in to have afternoon tea at this annual village event.

The Chairman and committee would like to thank everyone who came to support us and to help raise the sum of £320. Thanks also to those who kindly made jam and scones, and to others who donated raffle prizes and helped behind the scenes. This was once again a very happy and enjoyable afternoon helping to raise money for St Lawrence Church fabric fund.

Tea & Toys
Written by Administrator
Tuesday, 27 May 2008
Tea & Toys is a small and friendly mother and toddler/baby group.  It meets every Monday (during term time only) at the village hall in Westbury from 10.30 am to 12 noon.  All toddlers and babies are welcome.   A donation of £2 is invited per family.

There is a “free play” time with coffee and cakes or biscuits for the adults.  The toddler group usually ends with an informal singing session.

The toddler group is a great way of meeting people in the village and new faces are always made welcome.

Alphabet Pre-School
Written by Administrator
Tuesday, 27 May 2008
We are a small, rural pre-school based at in the village hall in Easton (5 minutes from Wells).   We provide day-time sessional care, during term time. We take children from 2½ to just under 5.  As we are based in an old school building, we have an excellent and secure outdoor play area, with climbing equipment and the run of the old school playground.

We believe in developing children’s confidence and independence, in a quiet and nurturing atmosphere.  Our staff are dedicated and experienced.

We have had a good Ofsted report recently.

We have an active committee and have forged close links with the local community.  We are the  “feeder” pre-school for St Lawrence’s, Westbury-sub-Mendip.  We have flexible admission arrangements, and children attending our pre-school come from a wide area.

We are open on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, from 9.00 am to 12.30pm.  There is a hand-over session between 9.00 and 9.15am.  Sessions currently cost £7.50 (this is subject to change).

We have ample parking facilities and we are only a 5 minute drive from Wells.

For more information, or for a copy of our prospectus, please ring or text 0777 9990 325 or send an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Saturday, 10 May 2008

The slides from the training evening are now available as a pdf file.

On the evening, we were running short of time and the  internet connection wasn't too good so much of the content was skipped. As a result, some of the slides might not be familiar to those who were present on the evening.

The Westbury Society has announced a photographic competition. The theme is Westbury-sub-Mendip itself, the farms & houses, the built environment and the people who make life living here. They are planning an autumn deadline for entries so that it will be possible to select a set of pictures and produce a 2009 calendar in time for sale before Christmas.
