| August 2009. How it all began |
|
Orgainised by Andrew Buchanan, the residents of The Square enjoyed a tea party on August Bank Holiday Monday. On a beautiful afternoon, chairs, tables - some with posh cloths, tea services and home made cakes were wheeled out and set beside the old disused 'phone box. Some of us who couldn't wait for the sun to go down over the yard arm brought alcoholic beverages. ![]() The occasion proved quite timely, as a discussion took place amongst us about the future use of the telephone box in The Square, and it's entry into the forthcoming BT competition. Suggestions will be submitted by Cllr Bob Dolby at the next Parish Council meeting. A good time was had by all, and it is hoped that no-one has a cholesterol test this morning! Posted 1/9/09 Post ScriptAt the Parsih council meeting, Janet Fisher's idea of creating a Book Exchange in the decommissioned box was adopted, and it was agreed to enter it into BT's competition for the best innovative use of an adopted red telephone box. Parish Councillor Bob Dolby, whose brief was to steer this project through, organised the spring cleaning of the kiosk, putting up shelves, getting the signwriting in place and repairing the 24 hour light. Many thanks to those involved in this work. Word went round the village that books were needed for the initial stock and within a very few days the shelves were full. 10 days from Janet's suggestion to an operating community facility. ![]() Picture by Bob Dolby 2009 Bob took up his camera, and using villagers waiting in line in The Square, produced his now world famous picture of 'The Queue', which together with a picture of the kiosk interior formed part of our entry for the competition. Nicky Venning, a community corrrespondent with the Wells Journal, visited The Square and was taken aback by the transformation of the kiosk. Read her article about events. |
