The Village Hall, which is situated at the bottom of Hannah's Lane, was officially opened on Wednesday, 10th December 1913 at 2:30 in the afternoon by Mrs. Graves-Knyfton of Uphill Manor. A contemporary newspaper article, originally published on Friday 12th December 1913, describes the opening ceremony in detail. The 'New Hall', as it was known was originally owned by a group of worthy villagers who had contributed to its cost. However, during the 1970's the trusteeship was given over to the Village Hall Committee. The hall, which is constructed of stone with a red tiled roof, was built by local builders Messrs. Dennis Bros. in just three months. The cost of the land and the building was around £350.00 and these funds were raised by the villagers over a period of time. The main entrance door faces east, and there are two side entrances on the south-west of the building. The main room has an inside measurement of 50 feet by 22½ feet and the present accommodation is supplemented with a kitchen, a storeroom, a further small room which doubles as a bar area as necessary, and ladies' and gentlemen's toilets. The Village Hall is a registered charity (No. 274149) and has an annual accounting period ending 31st March. The Village Hall Committee consists of representatives from the Parish Council and from the various user groups and village societies. One of the Committee’s major responsibilities is to ensure that the Hall remains in a good state of repair and that any maintenance expenses together with the normal everyday running costs can be met from the various income streams. Current income streams include:
Members of the general public are invited to attend the Village Hall Annual General Meeting which is normally held shortly after the accounting year end. Details of the date of the AGM are published on the Village website, in Westbury News, in the PEW and on the notice boards sited around the village. |
