About the Friends of Westbury Church

Chairman : Pippa Mains      Secretary : Sue Reece      Treasurer : Nick Mayor

The Friends was formed in 1994 with the object of assisting in the ongoing preservation of the fabric and furnishings of the Parish Church of St. Lawrence, Westbury-sub-Mendip as an ancient building of beauty and historic interest, and also the Parish Churchyard. The Friends is a registered charity (no 1050069) and membership is open to any persons resident in the Parish and, subject to the committees’ agreement, to persons residing outside the Parish.

The Friends is a registered charity and membership is open to any persons resident in the Parish and, subject to the committees’ agreement, to persons residing outside the Parish.

The annual membership is currently £10 (£5 for under 21’s) but donations of any amount are, of course, always welcome.

It is stressed that funds raised by The Friends can only be used for the purposes defined in the rules and are entirely separate from the funds handled by the Parochial Church Council.

An annual general meeting is held in the early part of the calendar year at which Financial accounts and a general report are submitted, and the officers and committee members for the ensuing year are elected.

New members are always most welcome and a membership application form can be obtained from Sue Reece on  01749 870618.

Over £24,800 had been raised by the end of 2006 to assist with the cost of carrying out repairs to the Church.  In addition The Friends have also provided a wheelchair for use in the Church and have assisted with the cost of new bibles and new bell ropes.  In 2002 we paid for a new automatic re-start mechanism for the tower clock and our latest donation of £6,000 was given towards the cost of the new Church toilet.

                                            Registered Charity Number 1050069
